Why is it Important to Look Good???

Dressing up for work is no longer an easy task. With the changing face of organizations today, employers are becoming stringent and particular about the way their employees dress

With the changing times, looking presentable and attractive has become quite a compulsion for young professionals. Going to work no longer means pulling out a pair of black formal trousers and pairing it with your favorite shirt, casual kurtas, funky jewellery, and tattoos have become quite a common sight in many organizations today.

Everyone wants to look stylish, but then there are rules and regulations that every employee must follow if he/she is working in a professional setup. Hence, employers usually have a tough time drafting dress code policies that are acceptable to their employees and at the same time give the company a professional look.

Is it necessary for an employee to look presentable at all time and to be dressed in a particular fashion and does it actually hold any relevance? Believe it or not, it does! Experts say that no matter what the position of the employee in the organisation is, the employee should look perfect. It is important for organisations to follow a dress code policy as they are frequently visited by clients, job seekers, foreign delegates and other important people. The purpose of introducing personal appearance, standards is to portray the brand image of the organisation in a positive light.

In my last organisation, it was very important to follow a prescribed dress code. Since it was a BPO, it was all the more important since a huge number of young people were working with us. If we didn’t keep a check on this, employees might just turn up at work in an inappropriate attire.

Most organisations today follow a dress code policy and make it a point that all employees adhere to it. Some organisations even go to the extent of getting the employees to sign a code of conduct form during the time of joining. This is an additional step to ensure that they follow the right kind of dress code once they start working. On weekdays, organisations make sure that their employees dress formally and during the weekends, they allow their employees to let loose and dress in smart casuals. However, they frown on the idea of showing off visible tattoos and piercing.

Employees are expected to dress in a manner that is normally acceptable in similar business establishments. Employees are discouraged to wear flamboyant attire, athletic clothing, shorts, and hats.

Many companies too follow similar policies, however they do not force their employees to dress in a particular fashion.

It’s well understood that looking presentable helps you make a good impression on the people that you come across in your professional or personal life. But, does it also have any effect on the reputation of an organisation on the whole?

It portrays the company’s image and also conveys what the company stands for. However, not everyone agrees to this. Experts in the field say that the relevance of having a protocol is that all employees know the dress code they need to adhere to and look professional at work. It does not affect the vision and values of the organisation.

So how do organisations make their employees follow a code that is acceptable by both? Simple, they introduce a system. Many organisations have introduced semiformal dress codes. Companies are very strict towards their policy because they believe that the employees are the face of the company and must comply with the following personal appearance standards.

Organisations ensure that their employees follow the dress code policy set by them and do not break rules and regulations. And if they still do not follow, they make sure that the employee is apprehended in the right manner. Moreover, employees who flout these policies are also under the scanner and are perceived as disobedient and unorganised.

Defining a casual, yet acceptable dress code for the workplace is not only an uphill task for managers but also slightly tricky at times as the policy has to be both employee-friendly and formal. It needs to be consistent and precise. It needs to match the needs of the young and suave 20-year-old and yet be a comfortable choice for the 40 plus crowd.
