Love for the Language – Comm’U’n’I’cation Skills!

We communicate to form networks and relationships. Simple words weaved with innuendos, moulds response. We may not ‘push’ for perfection in delivering the language, we tend to assume we know! Our mouth is a factory, the brain, its research laboratory presenting the language we speak, a product, signifying our standards. We feel good to be around like-minded and eloquent people. The reason we vouch for the ones, who share our vision, remains confined to the usage of keywords and sentence structures, to which we subscribe. Here’s an attempt to bring you a quick read, which may propose a higher proficiency.

Identify the systemic errors: There are few main areas including the grammar, usage of words and idioms, incorrect or incomplete sentences, running out of words at the end of a sentence. Most of us include the emotion which is subjective and localisation of words. This may not appear as a fatal error. Rather quintessential in building rapport

Work through different levels of communication: Avoid incomplete sentences at every cost. It not only affects the understanding of your listeners, but digress from the purpose. You may use or even over use simple sentences. Eventually as you train yourself, try and frame similar sentences with a higher level complexity. Repeating of words and messages needs to be avoided. Frame the sentence differently, if you are required to use the message to either assert yourself or for the benefit of those who missed it in the first place.

Language enrichment: Its best when you focus on what you wish to enrich. Take one step at a time. Plan for vocab for a fixed duration, thereafter framing sentences and finally accurate presentation. Begging the question: This phrase is a fallacy that stands for an empty claim. Often this is missed with raising a question, which rather means the opposite.

Learning resources: It helps the most if you stay focused on the sources that adhere to the global standards. In case you lack time, try and listen to The Economist or The Financial Times for your news update. Choose between standard reports to BBC documentaries which may include conversation by the global standards. The news features presented through short duration videos, will help you stay focused on the vocab and sentence structure , as required in the professional environment. Dashboard: Create a mental dashboard to measure your communication on parameters relevant to you. You may measure errors made in every sentences and monitor accordingly. Grammar, Mother Tongue Influence, synonyms, phrases and sentence structure to name a few.

Communication remains the tie that binds. The rules remains simple. Comma depicts the ‘Pause’ in the thought. The subject and predicate balance the focus. Connect the thought with phrases to impact decision making. Let a metaphor steal the show. You literally weave intent with your gift of gab, to necessitate plans into action. Often we stand robbed by innuendos. Quest for perfection of usage of the language, steer the focus away from the human dimensions. The balance strikes when the message is communicated beyond the scope of the sentence.

Lets transverse to your meeting room with heated discussions and figure how this can establish your thoughts better. In a meeting where you are debating the new talent management strategy to involve fewer employees on payroll and more on vendor-rolls, you may require to present data on how such an arrangement even-though cost effective would lead to higher attrition rate and lower loyalty to the employer. This  process as suggested by the finance team, would directly compare the current costs incurred to the future. At this point, you can nail the situation with the cost of training temporary staff, increased level of function to ensure data secrecy and finally managing two levels of employees without creating a gap in the treatment. Presenting these would hold good, when you are able to weigh data to hard facts. A cost incurred may offer rich dividends when rightly implemented. Your communication, thus remains economical yet persuasive.

Your focus remains to master the language that you use to communicate. It need not remain limited to English or a local language. You may work for any foreign national client, hence require to communicate using it. Your goal remains in being understood, not sound pompous but use words economically.
