The definition in the dictionary: Looking up “Seiketsu” in the dictionary we find that it means unsoiled things, purity and cleanliness (clean manners) “not dirty”, (clean clothes) acts correctly, is not underhanded (clean politicians)and so on.
The definition used in the workshop:
When we use the word “Seiketsu” it means that the workshop is maintained in a condition of cleanliness and neatness. In other words it describes a situation or a result: it does not describe the phenomena or operations of “Seiketsu”. Accordingly we have Seiso (the act) and “Seiketsu” (the results); the two are inseparable. Going one step further, we can say that “Seiketsu” is none other than the maintenance of good Seiri, Seiton and Seiso. It is the clean workshop which is a safe place to work and provides a good working atmosphere. In order to maintain this situation, work clothes should be white, or another brought color on which dirt will stand out. Horizons should be expanded to include the total environment there are some plants which put flowers in their workshops. The ultimate in “Seiketsu” is the parlor plant. Organizing the above we have the following:
1. “Seiketsu” means always having the four elements of production in a clean condition and keeping them that way.
2. Directly, there are “Seiso” actions and then “Seiketsu” (the result) and the two are inseparable.
3. “Seiketsu” is proof of good “Seiri Seiton” and “Seiso”.
4. “Seiketsu” is only complete when its horizons have been expanded to include the entire working environment.
The Essence of “Seiketsu”:
1. It is the proof that 3 ‘S’ s ( “Seriri, Seiotn, Seiso”) are being faithfully carried out.
2. It is barometer which indicates the control level based on the 5S of all workers (Index).
The meaning of “Seiketsu” as one of the 5S and as part of TPM.
“Seiketus” is an important point especially for workplaces which handle foodstuffs, medicine, and medical supplies, but it is also important for other types of workplace where food is eaten, tea is served etc. Recently, conditional improvements have been made of environmental and pollution devices from human work safety and pollution points of view. It has become necessary to work out ways for dealing with dust, loud noises thinner based oils, poisons etc.
Before these though work clothes, work hats, safety shoes, aprons, and gloves must be kept clean, and hair beards and nails must be kept trimmed and neat so that work can be done easily. In order to keep things from getting dirty mechanical facilities, jigs, tools, and parts which are the source of dirt must always be kept clean (“Seiso”),and be kept from coming into contact with other tings unnecessary (“Seiri Seiton”).
Accordingly “Seiketsu” means that the mechanical facilities, jigs, tools, materials, parts, work clothes, aprons, safety hats, safety shoes, and gloves necessary for protection, as well as containers, floors, walls, aisles, rooms for breaks etc are kept in their necessary numbers, neatly straightened and cleaned and maintained in a condition which keeps disorders and trouble at a minimum.
For this, “Seiri”, “Seiton” and “Seiso” must be done faithfully and disorders which are consequently discovered be improved. This means that not only are things clean, but that there are no defects no breakdowns, no waiting, the minimum of incomplete items, and that production is accomplished on schedule.
The Basic Elements of the “Seiketsu” Maintenance System:
“Seiketsu” is used in direct and indirect relation to production is not temporary, but means a condition in which things are always clean and production is accomplished on time and without trouble. Production however, is a process in which things get dirty, and it is necessary to have a method of doing temporary cleaning. Trouble also arises and the sources are discovered. Emergency measures are taken, and improvements are made to prevent recurrence. It is also necessary to have a structure which can grasp indications of trouble at every step of “Seiri, Seiton and Seison”.
