Manufacturer’s decision on quality specifications to be adhered to


A manufacturer of a quality product can earn big profits and big share in the market. Today the manufacturer is required to give greater importance to quality factor. Many and many manufacturers having the same types of products are entering the markets. The consumer taste-pattern has become an ever changing factor in the market. In case of a seller’s market, a manufacturer can sell goods of whatever quality. But in this age of keen competition, it is not possible.

Now the level of quality is the mirror for a manufacturer, which reflects the design of the product, skill of the manpower employed, types of equipment, tools and machinery in use, amount of testing and inspection done, proportion of defectiveness or number of defective products produced etc. High level of quality reflects lower proportion or smaller number of defective products, high skill level of manpower, use of standard equipment and tools and better machinery, existence of effective testing and inspection methods etc.

The study of customer’s needs is generally made by the marketing department in terms of quality, quantity and price. This information is provided to the design engineering department of a firm. On the basis of such information a committee consisting of representatives of various concerned departments, headed by a design engineer prepares detailed specifications of the product planned for the production. Specifications are a detailed description of material parts and components used in making a product. They describe the quality of a product desired, in a brief or precise manner. The cost of production and the ability of the product to function are also considered while developing proper specifications. The products with standard specifications, manufactured by different manufacturers will be the same. When products or goods are ordered on the basis of standard specifications, the buyer as well as the seller now what is required.

Generally, three types of specifications are used:

1. Technical specifications
2. Performance specifications.
3. Brand name.

Technical specifications states the physical and chemical properties desired in the product, and if the properties are in measurable terms than they are called dimensional specification. This type of specification can easily be checked. Sometimes material to be used and method of manufacture are also prescribed.

Performance specifications:

The performance of the product or materials to be purchased or the services that a product will have to adhere to are called performance specifications.. Here the customers give importance to the performance of the products and not to the detailed analysis of the product, stating details of physical and chemical properties of the products. The conformance to the performance specifications can be determined by use of the product. Performance specifications thus indicate the needs of the customers for satisfactory performance. Performance specifications are used to purchase highly technical military and space products. When it becomes very costly to develop performance or technical specifications or if such a practice does not prove satisfactory, purchases are made on the basis of brand names.

On the basis of the strict specification of material, of the parts are not available continuously then the designer will have to specify alternate specifications, but ensuring quality. Moreover, production of parts of exact specification is very costly. It may also result in a higher rejection rate. Many vendors may not have adequate facilities to manufacture materials, parts of strict specifications. If there is certain difference in specifications does not affect the quality of the final product or the performance of the product material or parts or products should not be rejected. Consider judgment should be applied while taking decision of acceptance or otherwise.

A manufacturer must instill a sense of pride for excelling in quality in every employee in the work that he does. The Pyramids, the Taj, the Meenaskhi temple and other wonderful constructions must have been treated by workmen at that tome must have looked at them with extreme pride at their work. One should not forget that they worked as a team for imparting the aesthetic quality and the team was not ten or fifteen but a few thousand workmen who took pride in constructing an outstanding quality monument. When they have worked all must have lost to them but their art remained.
