Field of design offers myriad opportunities

There is a rising demand for designer from varied fields in India as well as in other parts of the world. Be it in fashion design, product design or interior design, designers are making waves all across.

In keeping with its goal of assisting students in making informed academic and professional choices, Education Times, recently conducted a counseling session on “Aptitude test and Career Guidance in Design”. This event was led by Silica Design Institute and counselor for careers in design in India and abroad. Parents and students kept speakers engaged by bombarding them with a plethora of questions.

Good drawing skills (and not excellent) are definitely required to succeed in architecture. A good hand on 2D and 3D structures, proportion and balance is required. You may not have the required drawing skills right now, but can definitely acquire the same with practice over a period of time.

You have to complete a Master’s in Fine Arts with art history as your major subject in order to become an art curator. JNU, Shantiniketan and MS University, Baroda are three major colleges that offer this course in India. This field offers a number of career opportunities both in India and abroad as a scholar in art, art curator journalist, etc.

You could pursue the course in applied art at the JJ institute or Rachana Sansad or even enroll for the communication design course (with a specialization in graphic design) at NID, MIT, Srishti or Symbiosis.

For good score in the entrance for applied art courses, your focus should be on memory drawing with good composition and proportionate human figures. Design in pencil and color and object drawing in pencil shading and color are other areas would need to a master. Apart from these, you need to hone your creativity and visual imagination in order to excel in the entrance test for admission to the courses in communication design.

The field of design offers myriad opportunities in product design, furniture and interior design, toy and game design, fashion design accessory design, fashion communication, graphic design, animation, new media design etc. a fresher from a premium design school such as NID, NIFT, Shrishti, MIT, SID, etc can initially expect to earn anywhere between Rs three to 10 lakh per annum.

Premier design schools do use technology as part of their teaching technique and curriculum, so this is not true in all cases. However, in case the institute you pursue your courses from does not offer the opportunity to become proficient in the technology used in the industry you could simultaneously pursue a digital design course from institutes like EDIT, NIIT, etc. Such courses will boost your employability.

NIFT offers a specialization in fashion design for those interested in careers in fashion and apparel design, fashion and lifestyle accessory design, leather design, knitwear design, textile design and fashion communication. There are more than 1300 seats over 13 centers of NIFT across India. Institutes such as Pearl, SOFT and SID too offer courses in fashion design. The entrance exam for entry to these institutes is held in the month of May / June. Thus, you can appear for these tests even if you have failed to clear the NID entrance.

Undoubtedly, pursuing a proper long term course is better than pursuing short term course in terms of acquiring good knowledge and skills required by the industry to get a good job. A degree or diploma doesn’t matter as long as it is pursued from a recognized institute. For instance, the graduate diploma offered by NID is definitely more valued than most degree courses offered by various other institutes.
