Demand less get more

Does it help to be a demanding employer at all times? Being one can hamper the productivity of your employees thus making them less engaged.

Employee engagement is an issue that many organizations are addressing, the reasons for which lies in the simple fact that when the organization starts expecting too much from its employees an constantly expects them to deliver the results, their productivity levels fall drastically. Organizations need to analyze and accept the fact that the total turnaround of the organization is affected if employees working there are burned out or disenchanted with their work. There should be a healthy balance between the demand and expectation of the employer from his /her employees and the rigidity exercised to meet the expectations. High demand decreases productivity and brings about a negative outlook in the mind of the employee and this is a sign that the employee is unhappy and disengaged form his /her job.

Unlike the past, people prefer jobs, which are less stressful and provide tem with an opportunity to grow fairly. In my view, instead of over demanding a progressive organization should care about its employees with a humane touch and see the difference

It is HR who has to ultimately correspond with the employees and the management to address this problem and maintain peace between the two parties so as not to disrupt the balance of the organization functions. HR should be proactive and intervene before the occurrence of any major grievance caused due to over demand phenomenon HR should be more people friendly and able to judge the undercurrent in the organization. It should be able to create an atmosphere in the organization where in people feel; free to share their concerns or any other issues pertaining to the working environment. HR should also act in a strong manner with over demanding bosses. These types of seniors should be given sensitivity training.

The biggest after effect of this practice is a very high attrition rate, which in turn only increases the investment of the organization. An employee needs to feel at ease at his /her workplace in order to give his /her best at the job at hand. But when there is a discord between the senior management and employees and the demand supply chain is not cleaned every once in a while, the employee becomes very dissatisfied with his /her work and may decide to quit, as today with a growing economy, money and stability are not the only things that a professional seeks. They also want holistic satisfaction from their jobs so that they go home, as happy employees.

It can tricky if the HR manager tries to handle this situation from both, the employee as well as employer pot of view and in such a case, there has to be a mutual point of agreement, which is agreeable ad acceptable to both. This problem can be solved by having robust and well defined KRAs and goal setting processes in place. If the organization has a smart KRA system in place, then it is good for both the parties involved as both are clear in their mind on what is expected from them. HR can further ensure that there is a mutual agreement between the superior and the subordinate on the targets and the numbers.

So, in order to increase the productivity level of your employees as well as avoid employee disengagement HR should realize the importance of the concept of demanding less from their employees to get the maximum returns form the organization’s human capital investment.
