In today’s competitive and more liberal world, the corporate environment is surrounded with a healthy dose of male and female bosses. However, the question remains as to which gender is the better among the two. If we were to believe the numerous studies that have been conducted then women bosses would be the most hated creatures in the world.
For instance a 2008 study conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry in India (ASSOCHAM) had revealed that more then 68 per cent men and women prefer male bosses at their workplaces in India. The majority of the respondents, who voted for male bosses, argued that women approach work with more emotions.
The men and their concentration is not complete because of various factors. Also, male bosses are often egalitarian in nature and would mow down men and women pretty much in equal measure. However, female bosses would appear to victimize their own kind and more than 70 per cent of the time, they target women. It’s tricky actually. When a female boss is assertive and goal oriented the employees find her ruthless and mean and if she’s not as aggressive as her male counterpart then she’s termed as over emotional and unfit to be a boss.
Thus, in order to get a better idea of female bosses, they have been classified into three different types. These are as follows:
The Queen – this particular type of female boss can often be described as the imperious perfectionist. She can be identified from her perfect attire and aura that will make heads turn wherever she goes. She is a hard task master, believes that everyone is at her beck and call and doesn’t involve herself in petty office politics. In this case, a good female boss will help you in such a way, that you would be in awe of her. But a bad female boss would make you want to start a revolution single handedly.
Head Girl – This female boss can be identified as the boss who is always on the lookout for their employees. She would often give her employees a ride home; take them out for lunch and about their ambitions without any inhibition. This particular type would often demand for 100 percent loyalty and would try to mould her employees into her own image with a touch of maternal pride. However, in this case the boss often has favorites and indulges in office politics.
The only women in a Man’s world – This particular type of boss believes that she can uniquely combine the best of both sexes by being a tough, driven and irresistibly feminine.
She believes that it’s a tough world for women and would want everyone else to have the same experience clawing their way to the top as she did. Nobody leaves before she does and she is the type who will schedule late team and strategy meetings on Friday.
Thus, while an employee would encounter the above type of bosses, once in their career the best way to deal with them are listed below:
Learn her preferences. The employees should try and learn about the preferences of their bosses. If the employee knows what his boss prefers then he is likely to do a better job than his peers. For instance, does she prefer setting the documents to print preview before you email them to her.
The employee should try and be more proactive. The employee should often ask more questions and should take the initiatives of taking up different types of work and roles. Female managers are often detailed oriented and like it when work is done completely and thoroughly.
The employees should try and show his boss that he is a team builder. He should embrace her ideas and suggestions and help create a friendly atmosphere at work.
The employee should often appreciate his bosses supervisory and management skills. Female managers or bosses are often challenged in a male dominated workforce and knowing that they make a difference in your work life can help make a difference for all of those under her leadership.
