After getting ones appraisal and he doesn’t agree with it, it shows him in a poor light, is unfair etc. This probably also proves what was suspected by the employee all along – that the boss is in fact evil but what can he do at this juncture to save his skin?
No matter how much you prepare, there’s still a chance that your performance appraisal will have some negative points. Obviously, your appraiser will look for both strengths and weaknesses.
You should be prepared for that and should also know how you plan to improve. Don’t react emotionally to the negatives – remaining business like throughout the review is important.
If you disagree with your appraisal, the first thing you should do is talk about it directly with the manager or supervisor who has evaluated you.
Ask him/her to block some quiet time when he/she will not be interrupted as you have something important to discuss, she continues. Start the discussion by expressing concern with your appraisal.
Take care not to attack your appraiser or criticize the appraisal. Be open and cooperative. Acknowledge problems and deal positively and maturely with criticism. Avoid giving the impression that you’re on the defensive. Explain your objectives clearly and provide evidence to support your position.
If you and your appraiser are unable to reach an agreement, you should inform the HR department of your objection to the appraisal. If you go that route, make sure your approach is reasonable, not a full scale accusatory rant about your appraiser. They are more likely to consider your concerns of you’re business like and non-accusatory.
This is actually a dicey approach because it could damage your working relationship with your boss. So the appropriateness of this has to be checked first.
You should also make sure you have indicated your disagreement on comments to the performance appraisal documentation, so they will become part of your permanent record, right there along without appraiser’s opinions evaluations or ratings.
Keep in mind that however you approach the situation you must conduct yourself in a professional way and avoid making any personal attacks or comments directed towards the appraiser.
1. To reduce chances of an unfair appraisal for the next period, meet up with your boss and jointly compile the list of goals.
2. If you feel that targets are unrealistic, say so sensitively.

You really need to understand that it is not possible for your boss to change as personality traits are ingrained into an individual and usually remain the way they are. One cannot expect that his or her boss to get changed in the near future.
Frustration will not help any way. You can try options such as taking a break, venting to a friend or removing from situations where you end up getting stressed and angry. Whenever you feel frustrated get away to get a hold of and assess your emotions.
Perform your job well, while keeping as much distance as you can from your boss. If you work in situations where you have to work closely with your boss, try to agree on a working plan for yourself that will allow you to work independently on some projects, or atleast some part of the projects.
If you sense problems cropping up with your boss in the future, take notes describing situations and incidents as they occur. Document things in as much detail as you can, and also include dates.
Save a copy of all the e-mail communication between you and your boss to substantiate what you have in your notes.
