Tackling office over smarts

Over smarts in an office can be ‘noisiest’, ‘bully’, ‘hang-arounder’, ‘cheater’, ‘gossip monger’, and many other negative forms. Office life can have its ups and downs, but having to tolerate a over smart can make it too miserable. Office Over smarts take on many forms. The only way to deal with them is creatively. Here’s how to deal with different kinds:

If this fellow doesn’t understand that his loud conversations over the phone are disturbing you even after repeated reminders, do exactly what he does the next time you get a call. The other option is to hold up a sign in front of him/her that says, ‘Turn the volume down’. Others in office will start noticing this and the over smart will eventually get the idea.

You’ll get them by the dozen. However, you’ve got to be a nut if you get fooled every time the same colleague plays pranks on you. Remember, you’re not in high school anymore. So just hold your ground and refuse to be bullied. S/He will back off over time.

If your colleague doesn’t understand that you have a deadline to meet and keeps chatting no end, try standing up and walking out of your office or cubical when that colleague enters. The unspoken message of your body language will clearly tell him or her to keep it brief and head for the door once done.

One must have come across some idea stealer colleague at least once in your work place. And if you are the kind who till date has been taking it with a smile, it’s time to take some action. Slip in a really bad idea and let the over smart steal it thinking that it’s a good one. However beware that this might only encourage the over smart to become worse.

Sometimes the boss: If your immediate superior acts like a over smart at times, it might be prudent not to argue much with him/her. Take a look around the office and you’ll see many others who are much worse than your boss. If your company has quite a few, it’s time for you to start a job hunt.

Stay away from gossip kings/queens. Only those who have nothing better to do in life take interest in gossiping. However, don’t entertain all this nonsense, especially in your cubical or at your seat. Just shoo them away every time they start off gossiping. Let them know that you are not interested in ideal chit-chats and have better things to do. Thereafter they will never want to share any gossip with you.

It is better if to work with people who you think can perform well. Delegate responsibilities early:

As soon as you get your assignment, start dividing up the responsibilities. Don’t schedule many group meetings within a short span of time and let people work at their own pace and according to their own schedules. Just get verbal commitments from group members in line with organization’s schedules and reconvene when everyone has completed their tasks.

If you have to give a presentation, don’t go first. Spend more time completing your assignment. Wait and see what other groups do, so that you can differentiate your approach from the norm.

Issues will come up. Some colleagues may act egoistic or lazy, so discover the weak link in the group, and give them the smallest piece of the puzzle to work on accordingly. If you have a flake in your group, distribute their workload among the remaining group members before something goes wrong. Make sure the work is done well in advance before the day of presentation.

Some people get bitter when group preparations go bad for a presentation, and the bulk of the work falls on their shoulders. If faced with a worst case scenario, embrace the opportunity to take control of the project you’re working on.

If you’re stuck with incompetent group members, why would you want that to affect your job that you’ve taken in hand? If you do everything yourself, you can control the final outcome. Sure it might be evident that no one else is helping, but you need to worry about your performance. It’s better to work all by your self than not getting it done at all. Just take control and make sure you succeed.
