We all come across someone we really cannot stand in the course of our work lives. It could be the colleague with the irritating voice, or the one who tends to pass comments on your work, or it could be just someone who has rubbed you the wrong way. While given the decorum expected in an office environment we just can’t come out and say it, there are some subtle hints that just might get the message across;
Keep Communication to a minimum: If the person you don’t like tries to get into a conversation with you; cut them short, use terms like Please get to the point or ‘I really don’t have time to discuss this right now’.
Make sure you don’t meet: Study their schedules, make sure you don’t take your coffee or lunch breaks at the same time.
Use avoidance tactics: If you find he is heading towards you, immediately divert to another colleagues desk, start studying your monitor with intense concentration. If it’s their birthday celebration at the office keep your pleasantries to the minimum.
Body language: The signals your body give out is enough to make a person realize that you don’t like him. One would be not to look at them directly when you speak, avoid eye contact completely; scratch your head, or fiddle with your pen when addressed by this person; always lean away when addressed by this person.
Spread the word: When you can’t say it to the person directly, let it slip to sympathetic ears. It’s even better if you seek out the office gossip and tell them what a pest you think this person is and now dealing with tem is a pain. Pretty soon the message will spread through the office grapevine and you will probably find the person avoiding you.
It is not you, it is me: This is a polite way of letting somebody down; it works in the realm of romance and should work in office as well. Tell them how, when they come over for a chat, you find it very distracting and cannot go back to the job at hand; or while you do enjoy their forwards to your official mailbox, you kind of lose sight of the official mail and they shouldn’t email you unless its urgent office work.
Chances are that unless the person is super thick-skinned he/she will get the message and back off.
Why colleagues do like that and rub their colleagues on the wrong side. The writer’s working experience is that they do this with most people in the organization and as a result fail to carry on their work because of others non-cooperation.. The leaders of tomorrow have to inspire themselves by redefining their goals and ambitious by finding out ways through which they could create the highest common good for all the stakeholders by using all their abilities. They have to reflect deeply and create powerful visions for themselves that make them connect everyday action to a higher purpose. When they are inspired by the goodness within that makes them serve this purpose, they become authentic leaders who touch one and all.
When organizations and societies become excessively focused on short term benefits and narrow thinking, we have a leadership crisis. The desire to acquire financial wealth quickly without paying attention to the means adopted for doing so, is at the root of this crisis. Way to overcome this problem is to pay attention to a new system of education. We need to develop inspired leadership by overhauling our existing ways of teaching and learning.
