An engineer is expected to be more analytical. His assay should show how he went beyond the syllabus to develop his scientific interests, like research projects, participation in technical festivals with details of the model he developed or more about how he used his technical skills to help others – made a website for a shopkeeper, or taught computer skills to senior citizens. MBA applicants on the other hand, may have to focus on how he has demonstrated leadership.
Focus your energy on painting a concise, complete and well-thought out picture of who you truly are, rather than present what you think the admissions committee is looking for. The most important advice that can be conveyed to an applicant is to be your self, which means be transparent and authentic throughout all components of the applications.
Though the number of essays you have to write may vary, some universities request a creative essay. They also have a unique third essay which asks applicants to express themselves creatively. This essay is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate who you are from a written essay to a painting photo gallery.
When it comes to recommendation letters, one rule you can go by is to approach people, who know you well as opposed to those that are known well. If you and get both, well then, that’s just perfect, but it’s extremely important to have the former. Because your letters must have detail and shouldn’t be a collection of empty platitudes
Select a person who knows you well, and do not chase designations. It is not important to get a reference from the Principal, or the Dean, or the President of the company. They may be important people, but if they write just a few generic lines, it doesn’t help you. They must detail you abilities and strengths in different situations and describe your potential as an academic student as well.
A graduate school applicant should send three strong letters of recommendation, whereas an undergraduate applicant may send teacher references from his high school. Any additional recommendation should e sent only if the applicant was involved with some specific activity that is significant, like competitive sport, community services etc.
The admissions committee wants to learn about you from two independent people who know you and your work. We prefer recommendations from people who can speak directly about your aptitude for, or accomplishments in, leadership and management. Thus, work related recommendations are more valuable than academic ones.
The resume is a series of crisp pointers of your academic and professional history and may especially be important if you’re applying to an MBA program, because most students arrive with some professional experience under the belt. Work experience is very important for students to have baseline experiences to contribute to the classroom discussion and fully leverage the MBA experience.
What we evaluate is not a function of the number of years you have been in the work place, but what you have learned. Considered are skills acquired, breadth and depth of experience, leadership and / or management skills as well as potential for growth. It is important that the resume clearly communicates what an applicant has done, particularly his or her impact and contributions within an organization. It should not simply describe one’s responsibilities; it should focus on results.
Highlighting how you should present your resume. It is important to have clarity in the presentation of facts and data. It should be easy to segment, easy to read and should always be presented in reverse chronological order i.e. most recent activity listed first. Keep it brief and crisp. More importantly, please don’t exaggerate or lie in your resume. It is very easy to detect artificial additions.
It’s very rare for interviews to be conducted at the undergraduate level, but at the graduate level, most MBA programs like to conduct an informal interview. This can be conducted either by telephone or video chat, or sometimes one on one interviews by alumni of the business school, designated to conduct interviews in your country for other Master’s / PhD programs like biological sciences, behavioral sciences, etc telephonic interviewed are usually conducted, especially if there is a possibility of a graduate assistantship being awarded.
The interview offers a personal exchange for the applicant to convey why he or she is a good fit for the institute. The committee has the opportunity to probe further on areas of particular interest or questions we may have on the application. They want to make sure that they are screening applicants not simply on paper, but also in person.
