For those who are not very academically inclined vocation courses offer the perfect opportunity to master a specific skill and hence increase one’s employability quotient.

The primary purpose of vocational training is to prepare individuals especially the youth in the age group of 15-25 years for the world of work and make them employable for a broad group of occupations. Vocational education consists basically of practical courses through which one gains skills and experience directly linked to a career in future. It helps students to be skilled professionals and in turn offers better employment opportunities. Many students now choose to not pursue expensive and time consuming college education because they are skilled enough for a job or self employment

Under the constitution of India, vocational training is the concurrent subject of both central and state governments. Vocational training is imparted by public Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and private owned industrial training centers (ITCs). Specialized women’s polytechnics both private and government target women exclusively.

Institute insights

ITIs were set up all over the country to impart skills both in engineering and non-engineering trades to young men and women in the age group of 14-40 years. The duration of the course varies from six months to three years for engineering and non-engineering trades. Educational qualifications for admission vary from class eighth to 12 class depending upon the trades. Some state governments and union territories have introduced training in certain trades to meet the requirements of local industrial under the jurisdiction of state councils for vocational training.

The National Council for Vocational training was set up by the government of India. It conducts the All India Trade Test and awards the national Trade Certificate. The States Council for Vocational Training is a counter part of NCTV at state level and it plays the same role that is played by NCTV at national level

Under the vocational training program, managed directly by the central government an a National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) for women, Noida as an apex center ten Regional Vocational training Institutes (RVTIs) for women at Mumbai , Bangalore, Hisar, Kolkata, Tura, Allahabad, Indore Vadodara and Jaipur have been set up. Advanced Vocational Training scheme was launched for training of highly skilled workers and technicians in a variety of advanced and sophisticated skills not available for other vocational training programs. Regular full time courses of two to 12 weeks duration re offered under the scheme in a variety of advanced skills areas.

Open schooling

National Institute of Open Schooling offers vocational education course at school level. More than eighty courses in the broad areas of agriculture, engineering and technology, health and paramedical, home science and hospitality management computer and information technology, business and commerce and teacher training etc are offered. Some courses offered are the two year Diploma in Radiography (English) after class 12 with science subjects or the one year Diploma in Modern Secretarial practice (English/ Hindi / Urdu) after class 12 in any discipline or the one year Certificate in Early childhood care and education (ECCE) (English / Hindi/ Urdu) after class 10 or the one year Certificate in footwear design ad production (CFDP) (English and Hindi) after class or the one year Refrigerator and Air conditioning (Hindi and English) after class eight.

Junior College

Minimum Competency Vocational Courses (MCVC) at class 11 and class 12 are offered in areas such as accounting and auditing marketing and salesmanship tourism and travel techniques etc. Vocational courses are a means of developing a person’s occupational capacities due account being taken of the employment opportunities.

Maharasthra state board, Maharasthra State Board of Technical education offers a wide variety of programs. Among them are AICTE approved diploma courses, some under the semester pattern, others yearly pattern some part time ad others full time.

Most of them are post class 10 diploma courses but a few are also post class 12 diploma courses. Among the post class12 diploma courses are hotel management and catering technology (three years) surface coating technology (three years) rubber technology (two and a half years) and pharmacy (two years). These are approved by AICTE. Post class 10 diploma courses are categorized under groups such as architecture ( architecture assistantship – three years, civil engineering chemical engineering computer engineering electrical engineering electronics engineering instrumental engineering mechanical engineering (including automobile engineering plant engineering packaging technology etc) metallurgy engineering mining engineering printing engineering textile engineering (including fashion and clothing technology dress designing and garment manufacturing garment technology textile engineering and special engineering group (with three year food technology, leather goods and footwear technology , leather technology medical laboratory travel and tourism plastic polymer engineering and sugar manufacturing and four years marine engineering.
